Sprint embraces FleetSafer software, as TomTom and LoJack partner up on fleet
In this week’s Brief: Aegis Mobility, Sprint, TomTom, LoJack, RealVNC, Car Connectivity Consortium, Wind River, Hyundai MOBIS, BMW, Daimler, Mercedes-Benz, Scope Technologies, Amaguiz, Panasonic Automotive Systems, and AUPEO!
Fleet telematics sat on the backburner during CES and the Detroit Auto Show; this week, several announcements brought it back to the fore. Aegis Mobility, after acquiring ZoomSafer and its suite of FleetSafer software solutions in late 2012, teamed up with Sprint to offer the FleetSafer distracted driving application to help businesses, commercial fleet owners and operators focus on driving.
FleetSafer is software for mobile devices that can help drivers avoid certain distractions. The software auto-activates once the vehicle is in motion, preventing texting, e-mailing and browsing, yet still enabling hands-free phone conversations. It also helps companies comply with the FMCSA rules for interstate truck and bus drivers and mobile phone use.
“Technology can play a huge role in helping businesses reinforce policies, minimize risk and make it easy for their employees to focus on driving,” says John Dupree, senior vice president of business sales, Sprint. “We’re proud to team with Aegis Mobility to make FleetSafer more broadly available through our direct sales team and offer commercial drivers the tools they need to operate more effectively and efficiently and to avoid distracted driving.”
Also on the fleet front, TomTom joined forces with stolen vehicle recovery specialist LoJack. Through its North Ameican deadlership network, LoJack will market, sell and support TomTom’s range of fleet management solutions.
These solutions will include TomTom's SaaS fleet management platform, smart navigation and tools for optimizing fuel consumption and workflow management.
Elsewhere in telematics, RealVNC received MirrorLink Certification for its solution VNC Automotive, following an extensive evaluation against the certification requirements outlined by the Car Connectivity Consortium.
VNC Automotive allows access and control of a mobile device from a vehicle's infotainment touch screen, steering wheel switches and by voice command, giving drivers access to approved smartphone content, music libraries and internet radio stations.
The certification allows RealVNC’s partners to be guaranteed compatibility with MirrorLink specifications.
Embedded and mobile software maker Wind River partnered with Hyundai MOBIS, a leader in auto parts in Korea, for in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) systems. Wind River will provide Hyundai MOBIS a software platform for next-generation IVI systems designed to deliver an intelligent and innovative driving environment.
The software platform will become part of Hyundai MOBIS's “multimedia overhaul service,” which allows owners of in-car infotainment systems in South Korea to upgrade GPS maps and Bluetooth and multimedia systems.
Like BMW with its iVentures, Daimler created a subsidiary to expand its mobility services business operations.
The subsidiary is named "Daimler Mobility Services GmbH" and specifically has its sights set on car sharing services, such as car2go and the moovel mobility app, and on intelligent parking solutions, such as GottaPark, in which Daimler acquired a financial interest in 2012.
The new company's headquarters are in Stuttgart.
Mercedes-Benz developed an advanced driver assistance system that aims to eliminate the threat of drivers driving unintentionally in the opposite direction to the flow of traffic.
The new traffic sign assistance system recognizes no-entry signs and issues an acoustic and visual warning to the driver if he or she should stray on to the incorrect carriageway and become a dangerous wrong-way driver.
The new system will be available for the new Mercedes‑Benz S‑Class, due to be launched this year and the facelifted E‑Class.
Telematics provider Scope Technologies announced Europe’s first in-vehicle, on-board-diagnostic-port-based Pay As You Drive (PAYD) program. Scope is running the program with Amaguiz, a Groupama subsidiary in France dedicated to selling insurance over the internet.
The device can be self-installed by the consumers themselves on the OBD port in their cars and will be used for all new insurance for Amaguiz.
Panasonic Automotive Systems announced plans to work in conjunction with Berlin-based AUPEO! to bring optimized personal streaming music to cars. AUPEO! currently offers a free music streaming service in more than 40 countries with a focus on the discovery of new songs and artists.
The two companies will work together to develop advancements in personalized streaming music and create customized cloud-based solutions, optimized for the automotive market.
