According to Euringer, giving customers greater freedom in what software they choose to install is essential. “Up to now, cars have traditionally been the way that they were on day one for the rest of their life, in [the] best case,” he says. “We add the pattern of a user being in control of the functionalities that [his] car has, the same way as you are in control when you buy a tablet computer by installing apps.”
According to Euringer, everybody wins. The customer has more control. And, for BMW, there is CRM value in having the customer revisiting his owner’s page and downloading new pieces of software. It also helps keep the car fresh, boosting its value when it comes to resell it, Euringer adds.
Finally, he touches on car OEMs transitioning from only making cars to also becoming service providers, and says he believes that people will pay for in-car content that adds real value.
