Video: Continental on connected car safety and multiuser HMI

Robert Gee, product line manager – connected systems & services, Continental Automotive, on global infotainment platforms, local content, car safety and how new car buying has gone from viewing the engine to playing with in-vehicle electronics.

In this video from the Consumer Telematics Show 2014, Robert Gee, product line manager – connected systems & services, Continental Automotive, considers a brought range of trends related to the connected car, including global infotainment platforms, local content, car safety and how new car buying has gone from viewing the engine to playing with in-vehicle electronics. He speaks with TU's Robert Gray.

“If you thought about buying a car 20 years ago, the sales person would pop the hood, you look at the engine,” he says. “Nowadays, you sit in the front seat of the car, and you start to play with the electronics, you start to see what the display looks like, you start to see how the radio sounds. This is a lot of the trend we are seeing nowadays.”

Another important trend Gee highlights is in-vehicle infotainment systems that enable a safe human-machine interface (HMI) for the driver while allowing other occupants to access connected features, which are more comfort- and entertainment-related. He ends on how connected vehicle safety has become a major focus for carmakers.

“In the past, what we saw with the vehicles was really the lowest-cost approaches, but we are actually seeing now an increased trend pushing for better mobility, traffic information and safety of the vehicle,” he says. “So we are starting to tie in all of those things that connectivity in the vehicle can bring to the vehicle system, making it more of a complete set.”
