Video: HERE on the need for better, more immersive maps

Floris van de Klashorst, vice president for connected driving at HERE, on how automotive maps need to evolve to meet the needs of today’s and future connected drivers.

In this video from Telematics Munich 2013, Floris van de Klashorst, vice president for connected driving at HERE, talks to TU’s Jan Stojaspal about how automotive maps need to evolve to meet the needs of today’s and future connected drivers.

One trend he highlights is maps tailored to one’s particular circumstance – whether one is on foot, indoors, driving at a high speed on the Autobahn or trying to find a parking place in a busy city center.

“You need to have different information, different level of granularity of information, different types of information,” he says. “We call that computational cartography – creating a map on demand, really tailored to the specific use case of that moment of that person in that situation.”

Another trend is maps enhanced with dynamic, real-time information that goes beyond traffic data, for example, by translating a car slipping on an icy road into a real-time black-ice warning. Yet another trend is high-definition map accuracy, which includes 3D models of objects and buildings and moving from center-line guidance of the road to lane-level guidance.

“It’s very important that we start to give the right level of information,” he says. "Many of the collision systems and the safety systems are on-board, so having the accuracy of the system for planning – that there are two lanes to the right or two lanes to the left – is a very important part of it."

Jan Stojaspal is the executive editor of Telematics Update.
